Heatstroke & Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: Singapore Family First Aid 🌡️

Singapore’s relentless combination of heat and high humidity creates a constant risk of heat-related illnesses. For all families, especially those with young children and the elderly, knowing the critical difference between Heat Exhaustion and the life-threatening Heatstroke is your first line of defence.

Spot the Danger: Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke

The critical difference that separates Heat Exhaustion from the potentially fatal Heatstroke is changes in the person’s awareness. Look for the definitive signs: Are they confused, very drowsy, or unresponsive?

Act Fast: Immediate First Aid Actions

The core of all heat illness first aid is rapid, effective cooling. Your actions in the first few minutes are crucial.

Heat Exhaustion (Serious but Reversible)

  • Stop Activity: Move the person to the shade or an air-conditioned room.
  • Cool Down: Remove extra clothes. Spray skin with cool water and fan quickly (evaporative cooling). Apply cool packs to the neck, armpits, and groin.
  • Hydrate: If the person is fully conscious and not vomiting, have them sip water or an electrolyte drink slowly.
  • Monitor: If they don’t get better in 30 minutes, or if confusion starts, call 995.

Heatstroke (LIFE-THREATENING Emergency)

  • CALL 995 IMMEDIATELY. Do not delay.
  • Aggressive Cooling: Remove outer clothing, soak the entire body with cool water, and fan hard. Apply wrapped ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin.
  • Safe Positioning: If they are unresponsive or vomiting, gently roll them onto their side (the recovery position).
  • Avoid Medications: Do not give Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.
  • NEVER give fluids to anyone who is confused, drowsy, or unresponsive.

Heat Prevention for Vulnerable Family Members

Preventing overheating is your most crucial step. Check on family members regularly!

Simple Rules to Live By

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and limit alcohol.
  • Avoid Peak Heat: Schedule activity outside the 11 am to 3 pm window.
  • Stay Cool: Keep your home cool and shaded.
  • Protect: Use hats, light-coloured clothing, and seek shade outdoors.

How to Know if Your Child is Drinking Enough? (The Quick Check)

As a parent, you don’t need a lab test to confirm proper hydration. The most reliable and simple indicator is right here!

  • Optimal Hydration: Your child’s urine should look pale—think light yellow or straw-coloured.
  • Dehydration Alert: If the urine is dark yellow or amber, it means they are dehydrated and need fluid immediately.
  • Remember: Be proactive! Offer drinks often and don’t rely on your child to tell you they are thirsty.
